"Will This Avocado Get Me Pregnant?" – The TTC Food Obsession

When my partner and I first started trying for a baby, I was just living my life, eating what I wanted, and assuming it would happen naturally. Spoiler alert: It didn’t.

After about a year of trying, I started getting serious. I quit smoking (because, duh, that’s fertility enemy #1), started researching all the things, and before I knew it, I was Googling "fertility superfoods" like my life depended on it.

And let’s be real—when you’re struggling to conceive, you’ll do anything. If someone told me that standing on my head while eating flaxseeds would work, I’d have done it.

Did changing my diet magically make me pregnant? No. But did I feel like I was giving my body the best possible shot? Absolutely. And when we moved on to IVF, I knew I had done everything I could to set myself up for success.

So, if you’re trying to conceive and wondering which foods actually help fertility (and which ones are just overhyped trends), here’s what science—and my own experience—says.

Best Foods for Boosting Fertility Naturally

1. Leafy Greens (Spinach, Kale, Swiss Chard)

💡 Why they help: Packed with folate, iron, and antioxidants, which support egg health and hormone balance.

✔️ Best way to eat them: Smoothies, salads, or (if you’re feeling fancy) sautéed with garlic.

🙋‍♀️ My experience: I tried to eat more spinach but mostly ended up drinking it in smoothies so I wouldn’t taste it.

2. Healthy Fats (Avocados, Nuts, Olive Oil)

💡 Why they help: Good fats help regulate hormones and support ovulation.

✔️ Best way to eat them: Avocado toast, almond butter, or a drizzle of olive oil on everything.

🙋‍♀️ My experience: I basically lived on avocado toast and convinced myself it was the key to pregnancy.

3. Berries (Blueberries, Raspberries, Strawberries)

💡 Why they help: High in antioxidants, which protect eggs from damage.

✔️ Best way to eat them: Fresh, in smoothies, or mixed into yogurt.

🙋‍♀️ My experience: I added them to everything because they were one of the few healthy things that actually tasted good.

4. Protein (Eggs, Salmon, Lean Meat, Legumes)

💡 Why it helps: Essential amino acids support egg quality and embryo development.

✔️ Best way to eat it: Scrambled eggs, baked salmon, or protein-packed lentil soups.

🙋‍♀️ My experience: Honestly, I already ate a lot of this—eggs, lentil soups, salmon—so I didn’t have to change much. I guess my usual cravings were doing something right. 😄

5. Whole Grains (Quinoa, Brown Rice, Oats)

💡 Why they help: Balance blood sugar and support hormone health.

✔️ Best way to eat them: Breakfast bowls, grain salads, or soups.

🙋‍♀️ My experience: I swapped out white rice for quinoa, but let’s be honest—sometimes you just need pasta.

6. Seeds (Flaxseeds, Chia Seeds, Sunflower Seeds)

💡 Why they help: Rich in omega-3s and vitamin E, which improve uterine lining and egg health.

✔️ Best way to eat them: In smoothies, oatmeal, or sprinkled on salads.

🙋‍♀️ My experience: I once tried to eat a spoonful of flaxseeds straight. Big mistake.

7. Water (Yes, Seriously)

💡 Why it helps: Hydration supports cervical mucus (which helps sperm travel) and hormone function.

✔️ Best way to drink it: Just… drink it. (Or add lemon if you hate plain water.)

🙋‍♀️ My experience: I had to force myself to drink enough water, but dehydration makes everything worse, including fertility.

Foods to Avoid When Trying to Conceive

🚫 Processed Foods & Sugar – Mess with hormones and spike blood sugar.

🚫 Excess Caffeine – Small amounts are fine, but too much can affect ovulation.

🚫 Trans Fats (Fast Food, Fried Snacks) – Linked to infertility in studies.

🚫 Alcohol – Occasional glass? Fine. But heavy drinking hurts egg quality.

Final Thoughts

When you’re trying to conceive, food can feel like one of the few things you can control. Does eating avocados guarantee a baby? No. But fueling your body with fertility-friendly nutrients gives you the best possible foundation.

At the end of the day, it’s about balance. Eat the healthy stuff, stay hydrated, and if you need a croissant (or three), go for it. Because stress is worse for fertility than any single food choice.
