This delicious, low-calorie version of a hot dog has become a staple in my kitchen. While I’m not the biggest fan of traditional hot dogs, this recipe completely won me over. One of the main reasons? I try to avoid highly processed foods and steer clear of standard sausages. Instead, I usually make this hot dog with roasted chicken sausage, which is less processed and packed with flavor. Of course, this recipe works perfectly with a classic hot dog, too.
For the veggies, the recipe calls for red and yellow bell peppers. While I usually use both, it’s just as tasty if I only have one type on hand. The addition of caramelized onions adds a sweet and savory touch, and for spice lovers, a few drops of hot sauce make it even better.
It’s so good you wouldn’t believe it’s healthy! On days when I want a little indulgence, I’ve found that adding mayo (even though it’s not part of the original recipe) pairs beautifully with the flavors. Trust me, it’s worth trying!
Ingredients (for 1 serving, 360 kcal):
- 60 g (2 oz) French baguette
- 50 g (1.8 oz) chicken sausage or hot dog
- ½ onion (cut into slices)
- A few slices of red bell pepper
- A few slices of yellow bell pepper
- 1 tbsp full-grain mustard
- 1 tbsp ketchup (preferably without added sugar)
Instructions:
- Prep the veggies: Cut the onion, red bell pepper, and yellow bell pepper into slices (long strips).
- Cook the veggies: Heat a greased pan and sauté the onion and pepper slices with a pinch of salt until they soften and lightly caramelize. If they start to stick, add a splash of water.
- Cook the sausage: Boil or grill the chicken sausage (or hot dog) until it’s heated through.
- Assemble the hot dog: Slice the baguette down the middle lengthwise (don’t cut all the way through). Place the sausage inside and top it with the sautéed peppers and onions.
- Add the finishing touches: Drizzle with mustard and ketchup. For a richer version, you can add mayo. And for spice lovers, a few drops of hot sauce pair wonderfully with this dish!
This recipe is so versatile—it’s healthy, flavorful, and easy to make. Whether you stick to the lighter version or add your favorite indulgent toppings, this hot dog is bound to become one of your favorites too. Enjoy!
